Why” It’s in the Bag” is needed!

Christmas and New Year for the vast majority of Australians is a wonderful time of the year.

But for those who are homeless, it is a very different story!

According to Share with Dignity’s last Annual Report:

  • 105,237 Australian’s are homeless – 44% of which are female.
  • “many of these women are often forced to choose between buying food to eat or buying expensive sanitary items.Women and children, either homeless or in shelters, were having to clean themselves in public toilets and use paper towels to create makeshift sanitary pads”

As Rochelle Courtney states, in the Annual Report – “This is not, and should never be, okay”

It is worth reflecting how we would feel if someone we cared about was in this type of situation!

Making a difference – It’s in the Bag!

From a simple idea, “It’s in the Bag” has grown to a point where over one million packets of sanitary products have been distributed to women in need across Australia!

Today, with some 2500 volunteers, they are making a real difference in many ways through a variety of support programs all aimed at helping the disadvantaged women and girls in our community.

How “It’s in the Bag” works

Like many terrific ideas, “It’s in the Bag” is a simple concept:

  • Find a handbag in good condition you no longer use
  • Purchase sanitary products and personal care items (hairbrush, shampoo, soap, deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste etc)
  • Add a card or personal note
  • Drop the handbag off at Bunnings or a Bunnings Warehouse before by 2nd December 2018

Through this simple action, you will have demonstrated you care and will make a difference in someone’s life!

Summary

Throughout Australia there are many wonderful organisations working hard to make a difference to the lives of the less well off in our community.

We are delighted to be able to contribute to the “It’s in the Bag” initiative and encourage other brokers out there to also get involved!
